**Description:**

The Applications Engineer Manager leads the Technical Estimator (TE) & Application Engineer (AE) teams in working closely with our commercial team (Sales & Product) to solve customer application problems by providing technical information, proposals & quotations with the primary goal of growing the Thomson business profitably. The position requires a strong technical background and a keen understanding of the Fortive Business System tool set to drive this growth. Strong leadership and mentoring skills are required to develop the staff, many of which come into the group directly out of college. The role also requires strong daily management skills to assure the team is meeting customer expectations with respect to the quality and delivery of quotations and technical responses. The position sits on-site in Radford, VA with the global customer support team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Customer Facing Support

o Support the TE/AE teams by providing guidance on technical and commercial issues on new customer applications & technical requests

o Ability to train and leverage sizing and selection tools and processes to optimize the product selection and quoting process with the goal of winning new business opportunities

o Work with the Sales and Product teams to evaluate Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and customer's specialized requirements and prepare design proposals to meet customer requirements

o Responsible for the submission of quotations in a timely manner using pricing guidelines, rules and processes which have been established by the product teams

Technical Leadership

o Provide "basic" product training of the complete Thomson product portfolio to customer service, TE's, AE's, sales associates or customers. Provide leadership & technical support on new product releases

o Liaison between functional and operational managers across the organization to support proposals & quotations for customized product solutions. Work with product leaders to ensure alignment with product strategy and operations team to understand product cost

o Remove road blocks that are preventing the team from quoting or providing technical responses to customer by direct communication with other functional leaders or escalating within the engineering organization if resolution is not attained

o Daily management, prioritization and resourcing of the case queue to meet customer expectations on response quality and timeliness. Research, prepare and present dashboards & reports related to team Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

o Share market and channel trends or insights with the product team that become evident from daily management or observation

Team Development

o Develop the technical and commercial skills of the AE & TE teams through coaching, mentoring and training

o Develop the TE & AE teams by setting SMART performance objectives and development plans to enable associates to grow within their role and prepare for other roles in the organization.

o Build organization and bench strength by providing hiring recommendations, evaluating associate performance and leadership skills and providing compensation recommendations

o Practitioner of the FBS (Fortive Business System) culture by leading kaizens to drive process improvements that result in a better experience for our customers

**Qualifications:**

+ Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical/Electronics Engineering or Physics

+ At least 3 years' experience in a people management role

+ Strong team building, organizational, problem solving, planning and decision-making skills

+ Strong analytical thinking, technical analysis, and data manipulation skill

+ Excellent communication, interpersonal, organization, writing, and presentation skills

+ Ability to work effectively without close supervision

+ Experience in customer facing/interacting role

+ Must be a US citizen
